Get Your Home Back in Shape

Now that the holidays are behind us, it’s time to get back to all those projects you’ve been putting off for the last couple of months. One of the most common—and most rewarding—projects for homeowners is creating more space for guests or gatherings. Snowball Junk Removal has tips and tricks to help you get the most use out of your spaces.

Declutter Your Spare Room for Extra Space

Has your spare room become a catch-all for clutter in your home? You’re not alone. Many of the homes we visit have at least one room that has become a makeshift storage space for items that don’t have a designated place elsewhere.

It’s daunting to look at a room that’s full of stuff and not know where to start. Many people feel overwhelmed by the project as a whole, so they shut the door and put it off instead of facing it head on. Here are some tips to make the project more manageable.

  • Plan It Out: The first thing to do is to make a plan. What do you want the room to be and how do you want to use it? When do you want to have the project completed by? Giving yourself a clear goal and deadline is a great first step because it boosts motivation and creates excitement for what you will have once you finish.
  • Do It in Bite-Size Chunks: Trying to tackle any project all at once is a recipe for disaster. Instead, do it in stages! We recommend sorting items by purpose first. Group together similar items that are likely to be stored together, such as office supplies, clothes, toys, etc.
  • Figure Out What You Need: Once you have everything sorted according to use, go through each group and eliminate the items you don’t need. These could be things that don’t get used or that you have duplicates of, or even items that are broken. Box these things up—separating the broken items out as trash—and set those aside in a separate place so that you can see your progress.
  • Create Storage Solutions: If your spare room has a lot of items just lying around, chances are you need to design a storage or organizational space to house them permanently. We recommend that you box up items you don’t use often and put them in your garage, basement, or other storage area first.

For everything else, we like clear, stackable bins for small items and larger, more permanent organizer with drawers. You can even use existing furniture like dressers or longer, thin bins that can slide under couches or beds.

After you get the room organized properly, call Snowball Junk Removal to pick up the items that you’ve decided are no longer needed in your home. We donate all items that are still in good condition, recycle metals, transport paint and building materials to disposal centers, and take everything else for trash removal.
